About the Conference

Conference on the Economic Development of the Arctic

Conference on the Economic Development of the Arctic will be held on June 18, 2016 in St. Petersburg, as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, at the ExpoForum Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The rapidly growing importance of the Arctic Region requires that Russia and the international community come up with fundamentally new approaches to developing polar territories, as soon as possible. Today, we need to do more than develop manufacturing industries rationally: protecting and remediating the environment and conserving traditional life-sustaining activities of indigenous minorities of the Arctic are of paramount importance as well.

The aim of the conference is to create an open platform for discussing certain relevant issues of socioeconomic development of the Russian Arctic, as well as international cooperation in this region. The Conference will help coordinate the efforts of international institutions, public authorities and the business community in Russia and abroad in ensuring stable development of the Arctic.

The subject of the Conference on the Economic Development of the Arctic is unique in that it includes not only discussion of domestic Russian topics, but also focuses on international cooperation in the macro-region, the aim being to find a joint solution to problems and ensure the prosperity of the Arctic and Northern territories. Making the region’s development its cornerstone, the Conference highlights business development and investment opportunities and integrated development, instead of considering separate sectors.

State officials from the Arctic nations, heads of specialized ministries and departments, governors of Russian subarctic regions, representatives of big Russian and overseas business, public and international organizations, leading scientists and experts have been invited to take part.
